ON THE AIR

The Odyssey Bookshop is one of five independent bookstores participating in WAMC's Roundtable on Tuesday mornings, just after the 10:00 news. People from the Odyssey will be on about once a month, talking about our favorite books.

Click here to see the list of the books we have talked about.

PROM by Laurie Anderson

Less abrasive than Anderson’s hard-hitting Speak, Prom illustrates inequity and choice. I immediately trusted the narrator even though she was speaking of a world I didn’t know personally. It is set in an urban area and includes realistic high school politics, the dangers (and joys) of relationships and neighborhoods, and the subtle changes that come with accepting challenges.

WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY by Lisa Grunwald

Refreshingly authentic, this romp through a 3 month period of a long term marriage illustrates the bumpiness of the emotional landscapes of friendships. Sprinkled throughout are thoughts of what "happiness" is. By the end, I had a better sense of my definition and satisfaction in the protagonist’s choices.

19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult

I thought a book on the best seller list didn’t need a tag, but for those of you that haven’t tried Jodi Picoult before, let me introduce you. She creates a merged genre: romantic fiction and ethics studies. In this book the focus is violence - an unexpected shooting in a non-urban high school. The topic is disturbing, but she approaches it from the intersecting lives of different people in the community. I didn’t always agree with the conclusions, but my thoughts were provoked. It is an engaging read. If you are not sure you want to take on the topic, try My Sister’s Keeper (medical ethics) in the Lit section.

The Mother Daughter Project by Renee Schultz and SuEllen Hamkins

I was part of this group, so it is a little disorienting to have us in print! It is heartening to have the stories of women supporting each other out in the world. Many of the ideas we came up with as a group of moms and daughters may prove helpful to people interested in creating their own community of growing women. If you are interested in a related book, The Mother Daughter Revolution (located upstairs in the parenting section) was the book that started the mom’s group mentioned in this book.

Being by Kevin Brooks

Have you read any of his other books? This is similar, in terms of bleak landscapes and many twists and turns. If you haven’t, this is a good place to start. Being is philosophical and somewhat sweet. I enjoyed the ‘taking life as it is’ quality of the main character and the kindnesses he ran into unexpectedly. It keeps you on edge and curious.

THE OTHER SIDE OF WAR: Women’s Stories of Survival and Hope by Zainab Salbi (National Geographic $28.00). If you are someone who wonders about the news that doesn’t hit the newspapers, this is a well-balanced collection of the devastation to and rebuilding of woman’s lives. Told by the CEO of Women for Women International, it represents individual woman’s stories from 6 war torn regions: Bosnia, Congo, Colombia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Rwanda. Again and again the healing comes from speaking out and forming community with other women. Moving and hopeful, with photographs as expressive as the text

U2 BY U2 by Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, Jr. (Harper $39.95). An oversized, photograph laden, chronological-formatted book focusing on the individuals who comprise the musical synergy known as U2. Impressively authentic, the manuscript is based on conversational transcriptions of Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry remembering their choices and growth over the last 30 years. The theme: how to make your flaws work for you. I found it very accessible and enjoyable. It has an index (helpful for an overview) but no discography.

PICK ME UP: STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW by David Roberts and Jeremy Leslie (DK Publishing $29.99). This nonfiction book for Middle School readers is a shiny, intriguing gem about the connections between ideas. It is designed to weave concepts together via raising questions, offering links, encouraging exploration from science through ethics. In true DK style, the visuals are as an important part of the page as the words. This is not a reference book, but a great gift for a budding thinker or a long car trip. Also, if read together, a conversation starter for inter-generational exchange.
